As an accredited laboratory, the State Office for Environmental Protection (LAU) of Saxony-Anhalt is able to meet the requirements of DIN ISO 17025 with the help of the Radioactivity Management and Information System (RaMIS) from GUS LAB GmbH. In addition, the sample processing workflow is largely automated in both routine and intensive measurement modes.

Designed with the environment in mind

The experts at the Department of Environmental Radioactivity and Radiation Protection at the State Office for Environmental Protection (LAU) of Saxony-Anhalt know best just how complex radioactivity monitoring is and what it means for the environment. Their task is to monitor artificial radioactive substances throughout the state as a precautionary measure to protect the public. In accordance with the routine measurement program, samples are tested for their radionuclide content. Radioactivity is measured in food, drinking water and groundwater, wastewater and waste, as well as in soil and plants.

In the event of a potential hazard, swift action is required—an efficient monitoring system is essential in such situations. Here, as in routine situations, the Radioactivity Management and Information System (RaMIS) is used. In accordance with the required measurement programs, it is used to automatically record samples and transfer the measured values from various measuring devices to RaMIS via LAF files, which is particularly important in the event of radioactive incidents.

Validated measurement data is transferred from RaMIS to IMIS and thus made available to federal control centers to ensure continuous assessment of the radiological situation. The master data stored in IMIS can likewise be imported into RaMIS and used there.

Quality-assured workflow tracking

As an accredited laboratory, the Saxony-Anhalt State Office for Environmental Protection is able to meet the requirements of DIN ISO 17025 for quality-assured, documented traceability of sample handling (from sample receipt to validated measurement results) using the RaMIS Radioactivity Management and Information System.

In addition, sample throughput is optimized as much as possible in both routine and intensive measurement modes, enabling LAU staff to respond quickly in the event of an incident and avert potential hazards.

Benefits for People and the Environment

Through RaMIS, the LAU Saxony-Anhalt benefits from the following advantages:

  • Sample runs in routine and intensive measurement modes are recorded automatically and without errors
  • Workflows are made more efficient
  • The collected data is seamlessly transmitted to IMIS and, consequently, to the relevant federal agency.

Staff at the LAU Saxony-Anhalt confirm that the requirements for quality-assured tracking of sample processing using RaMIS can be met with minimal effort. Above all, this efficiency benefits people and the environment.
